Das, a trader, had gone to Digha with four friends. Due to rough waves, tourists were asked not to venture into the sea. Seeing Das drown, his friends started screaming for help and alerted local rescuers who brought Das back. But he was declared dead at Digha hospital. Later, his body was sent for autopsy.
Gaurav Bhattacharya, a friend of Das, said they were sitting on the bench, but suddenly Das went to the sea without telling them. “When we saw him drowning, we sounded the alarm. But it was too late.”
Since Saturday, the local administration had asked tourists not to go to the sea due to the development of a deep depression and the local administration is using microphones to alert tourists. “There is a strong wind due to which the waves are choppy and this may have been the cause of Das’ death,” an official said.
