Dead Man’s Pier: Winter’s Wake is an original home in Halloween Horror Nights 31 and is a sequel to the 2016 scary zone Dead Man’s Wharf.
The official description reads: “In a New England fishing village, undead fishermen emerge from the waves for revenge. You and your scream team may have escaped their hooks in the fear zone. Now they’ll bamboozle you and sink you.
HHN 26’s fear zone was centered around Dead Man’s Wharf, a memorial to the crew of the lost Annabel Lee. It was populated by mutated fishermen and divers, whose bloated corpses were covered in coral, seaweed and other deep-sea detritus.
The house is based on a short story by former HHN creative director Blake Braswell called “Fisherman’s Sonata”. It follows Sophia, who encounters a strange captain on the pier at Dead Man’s Wharf. She came to throw her violin overboard, but the captain begged her to play one last time. His song catches the attention of the captain’s horrific crew and carnage ensues after the ship crashes into the pier. Hear Lora Sauls narrate “Fisherman’s Sonata” here.
Dead Man’s Pier: Winter’s Wake
One word: WOW.
It may already be the biggest Halloween Horror Nights house in the history of the legendary event. I honestly have never emerged from the first run of a house with a group, all of them looked at each other simultaneously and agreed in unison that a house was the best they had seen.
It’s so carefully constructed, with intricate multi-level sets that are visible from multiple scenes, creating a connected view of the whole house. The scares are also well thought out, offering creative concepts. It feels like the designers poured their heart and soul into this one, pulling out all the tricks from the last 30 years of Halloween Horror Nights.
With a captivating plot and incredible design, Winter’s Wake is already the house of the year in 2022.
