A Maine man is in custody after police say he stole a car with a woman and baby inside.

Hampton Police say David Tayes, 46, of Maine, stole the vehicle around noon from Hampton Beach State Park. Police said a woman and a baby he did not know were inside the vehicle.

Police said Tayes crossed the bridge to Seabrook at speeds high enough to endanger the lives of other people, including passengers in the vehicle.

When the vehicle reached a red light on Ocean Boulevard at Route 286, police said the woman was able to park the car and told Tayes she was calling 911.

Tayes got out of the vehicle, but police were able to find him and take him into custody shortly after, officials said.

Tayes faces four felony counts, including two counts of kidnapping.

Bill Page said he had seen Tayes before the incident happened and that something was “wrong with him”.

“There’s a bench at the end of the road there. He asked me for a cigarette. I said no. Then he asked me if I wanted to meet Lynard Skynard,” Page said. “Then I kind of walked away at that point. He said, ‘If you see them, tell them I’m sorry. Then I left.”
