ECONNECT Energy and Amon Maritime announce the launch of a joint venture – Azane Fuel Solutions. The new company will fill an existing gap in the ammonia value chain by developing ammonia vessel bunkering technology, products and services.
Azane Fuel Solutions will help achieve our ambition to accelerate the green shift towards zero carbon shipping solutions. Together, we are forward-thinking companies with extensive maritime and energy experience to develop the systems and infrastructure for safe and efficient ammonia bunkering, said Morten Christophersen, CEO of ECONNECT Energy.
Develop bunkering infrastructure technology
Azane Fuel Solutions will develop flexible ammonia fueling terminals to remove existing barriers to ammonia implementation. The new solutions will be able to receive fuel from ships, trucks and barges, in a refrigerated or pressurized state and optimized for ships fueled with ammonia.
Our shore option is ideal for industrial ports and supply bases, allowing direct supply to ships alongside the quayside, or transfer to a supply barge. Larger versions of the system can also function as bunker storage terminals, serving a fleet of bunker vessels.
Our floating option is flexible and mobile, and therefore ideal for the early years of the ammonia switchover, when early ships may need to bring their own bunkering station to their most common ports of call. A floating bunker terminal will retain its flexibility, and will also be useful for bunkering ships at anchor.
To enable the maritime green transition, new infrastructures must be put in place. Azane Fuel Solutions will focus on the bunkering part of the value chain and we see clear synergies with our ongoing ammonia fueled vessel projects, said André Risholm, CEO of Amon Maritime.
As a first step, Azane Fuel Solutions will offer its products and services on a global scale and will consider the northern European market as one of the first probable users of ammonia. There will be substantial market potential globally as the largest international high seas shipping market adopts the new fuel.
First industrial project – “Ammonia fuel bunkering network”
Azane Fuel Solutions’ first project is already underway. In collaboration with project partners, covering the entire value chain, from the production of ammonia to the consumption of ammonia as fuel on board ships, the project will develop and demonstrate an ammonia refueling network for ships, enabling the safe and cost-effective distribution, storage, transfer and use of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel. The project aims to be the first in the world to pilot ammonia bunkering operations – taking the first step in enabling a large-scale transition to carbon-free fuel for ships.
The “Ammonia Fuel Bunkering Network” project will overcome significant R&D challenges, and given the pioneering nature of the business, the project is seeking the necessary financial support from government green R&D grants.
